April 25, 2014 – With over 130 race boats already entered, this year’s 65th Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race is setting up to be a classical event. Already entered are Bill Gibb’s 52 Ft. “Afterburner” which would be favored to be the first to finish. The question will be whetEnsenada Yacht Raceher their crew is in Ensenada in time for dinner at Santo’s. Right on their rudders will be Roy P. Disney’s SC 70 “Pyewacket” going bow to bow with Ed McDowell’s SC70 “Grand Illusion. All eyes wil be on seeing some beautiful and unique racing boats like NHYC’s Rob Vaughan’s “Van Diemen” with her sweep back masts. The introduction of the reverse order start has changed the on the water expereince for many racers. With the faster boats starting later, there’s a tim e period during Friday afternoon where there are over 200 spinakers within sight of each other. The SoCal J120 Fleet of will be making a showing again with an estimated 10 boats going for the One-Design Trophy. This will be the second stop in their High Point Offshore Series which ends in September with the little Enseanda Race out of San Diego. Last year, after 135 miles, five of the J120’s found themselves about 20 boat lengths apart within 2 miles of the finish as the sun came up.
